The Green Mad House

In March of 2020 I launched a blog to share DIY projects, interior design trends and tips, plant care, and random bits of my life with my two cats in the Pacific Northwest and now in London. My company is dedicated to inspiring others to bring green into their life and to see the possibilities in everything. I ideate and write all my posts along with taking and editing all the photography and videography.

Creation of the Site

“Weeds are flowers too once you get to know them.” - Winnie the Pooh

The difference between flowers and weeds is a matter of perception. The definition of a weed is just a plant that is growing in a place that is not desired. This has always fascinated me and I find the sentiment beautiful. Adults and kids alike will see a puffy dandelion, make a wish, and blow its seeds into the wind in a symbol of hope and optimism that also promises to wreck any yard nearby.  How delightful. And thus my logo was created. A dandelion blowing into the wind.  The rest fell in line; earthy colors, a slight retro feel and a clean website that is easy to read and navigate.

Custom SEO and Accessibility

Although I used Squarespace for a base, I do many things to customize the site, increase SEO, speed and accessibility.

+ Custom HTML, CSS and javascript to give me a sidebar, custom image formats, and custom fonts.

+ Hidden HTML allows me to create no-follow links for products which increases SEO

+ I have hidden Pinterest imagery in each post as opposed to flooding my page with unnecessary photos.

+ I use alternate image titles to not only increase SEO but make my imagery more accessible to the visually impaired community.

+ I embed header and paragraph tags to improve SEO and accessbility by helping screen readers

+ I optimize image size and youtube videos to increase speed which is essential on a photo heavy site. The faster the site the higher the audience retention and the higher it ranks in SEO
